COFFEE MACHINES BUYING GUIDE

How to choose a coffee machine

Start with the coffee you drink and the effort you want to put in. The right machine fits an ordinary morning, not just the photograph on the box.

Start with your morning

Write down three things: your usual drink, how many cups you make, and how much preparation you enjoy. Someone who wants one quick black coffee has a different brief from someone making two cappuccinos before work. Decide whether you want to prepare the coffee yourself or press a button and move on.

Our finder covers capsules, manual espresso and bean-to-cup machines. Filter coffee and automatic milk systems are outside this selection. If those are your priorities, use the checklist below to widen your search rather than treating our current selection as the whole market.

Choose a coffee system

Capsules

A simple starting point when convenience matters. Check the exact capsule system before choosing: our Vertuo Pop example uses Vertuo capsules. Make sure you like the compatible drinks and their ongoing cost.

Manual espresso

Consider this if you want a hands-on routine. You prepare the dose and handle the coffee after brewing. The Dedica Style example uses ground coffee or compatible E.S.E. pods and has a manual milk frother. Whole beans need a suitable separate grinder.

Bean-to-cup

Consider this if you want the machine to grind and brew. Automation varies: the Magnifica Start ECAM222.20.B in our selection still needs you to steam the milk yourself.

Check the milk step separately

“One touch” can describe the coffee button rather than your whole latte. Read how milk is prepared, what equipment is included and what needs cleaning afterwards. If you want automatic milk drinks, look for that exact feature on the exact model, rather than relying on a family name or product photograph.

Think through making two drinks in a row. Would you be happy steaming milk yourself while the next coffee is prepared? That small routine question can be more useful than comparing a long list of preset names.

Budget for the cups, not just the machine

For capsules, divide the pack price by the number of capsules you will actually use. For beans or ground coffee, use the amount you expect to use per drink. Compare like-for-like drinks, then add any grinder, milk equipment and care supplies you need.

A useful sense check: a 10p difference per cup, at two cups a day, adds up to £73 over a year. This is an illustration, not a quoted capsule price or a claim that one coffee system is always cheaper.

Use the coffee you would choose, not the cheapest compatible option you would never buy. Your purchase budget and your ongoing coffee budget are separate decisions.

Measure the working space

Check width, depth and height, but also where the tank, bean container and used-coffee container open. Leave the access and ventilation space required by the manual. Think about the cups you already own and how you will refill and clean the machine in its everyday position.

Before buying, find the care instructions and replacement supplies for the exact model. A routine that feels manageable to one person may be a nuisance to another. We have not tested coffee taste, reliability or cleaning time, so we do not turn those into invented scores.

Your final buying checklist

  • The machine makes the drinks you actually want.
  • You are happy with the coffee and milk preparation steps.
  • The compatible coffee and care supplies fit your running budget.
  • The exact model, accessories and working space have been checked.
