How to choose a dehumidifier for drying clothes
Start with the room where the airer will go. The right machine needs to work in that room and fit the way you dry a normal load.
Describe your drying setup first
Note the room size, its usual temperature when laundry is drying, and how often you wash. Include thick towels and bedding if those are the loads that cause trouble. Check where the airer and appliance could stand without blocking the room’s everyday use.
A machine that is suitable for a warm spare room is not automatically the right choice for a cold utility room. Measure temperature in the conditions you expect to use, rather than assuming the whole home stays at the thermostat setting. If drying speed is your main reason to buy, treat this room description as a requirement.
Compare extraction at similar conditions
The litre rating in a model name is an extraction rating under stated conditions, not a tank size or a guaranteed daily result in your room. Look for the manufacturer’s extraction table at temperatures and humidity levels close to your situation. A headline number alone cannot tell you when your washing will be dry.
For example, Meaco’s Arete Two 10L table lists 1.38 litres/day at 10°C and 60% relative humidity, compared with 4.19 litres/day at 20°C and 60%. Those are published test-condition figures, not our laundry test. They show why matching the room matters. See the extraction table.
Understand what laundry mode changes
Read the actual control description: fan setting, humidity target, timer and stopping behaviour can vary. On the Arete Two example, the manufacturer describes a laundry timer adjustable between one and twelve hours. A timer setting is not a guarantee that every load finishes within it.
Check whether the air outlet can be directed towards the laundry and what clearance the instructions require. Space clothes according to the drying setup and keep the appliance clear of dripping items. Follow the exact manual for placement. In a cold room, compare compressor and desiccant designs using our guide to the two types.
Plan for noise, water and storage
If the room doubles as an office or bedroom, look for the sound figure in the laundry or higher-fan mode you will actually use. A quiet night setting may use a different fan speed. Published sound measurements from different brands are not necessarily a shared comparison test.
Compare tank size, full-tank stopping behaviour and how easy it is to carry the filled tank to a sink. Check any continuous-drainage requirements and whether the correct hose is included. A larger extraction rating with a small tank may still need attention. Also check machine weight if you will move it between floors.
Estimate a whole drying session
Use average power in kilowatts multiplied by hours and your electricity price per kilowatt-hour. For illustration, 200W running continuously for six hours uses 1.2kWh. At an example tariff of 25p/kWh that would be 30p. These are invented calculation inputs, not a product quote, current tariff or measured drying result.
Actual power and drying time vary with the machine, settings, room and load. To compare another drying method, compare the same load reaching a similar dryness, including any additional heating you use. Do not assume a dehumidifier always costs less than every tumble dryer. Our running-cost calculator lets you use your own inputs.
Make a shortlist around your room
- Its operating range and published extraction suit your drying room.
- You understand the laundry controls and required placement.
- The higher-mode noise and tank-emptying routine are acceptable.
- The purchase price, electricity and any accessories fit your budget.
Do not buy on a promised drying time alone. Leave space for the airer as well as the appliance, and follow garment care labels. If moisture problems continue outside laundry days, investigate the source too; this appliance does not repair a leak. Our main dehumidifier guide covers the broader home-use decision.
