AIR FRYERS BUYING GUIDE

What size air fryer do you need?

Start with what you want to cook at once. A headline litre figure is only one part of finding an air fryer that fits dinner and your kitchen.

Plan a meal, not a portion claim

Write down two meals you make regularly and one larger meal you want the air fryer to handle. Split each into the parts that need cooking: for example, fish and chips, or chicken pieces and vegetables. Note whether they need different temperatures or timings. This turns a vague “family size” search into a clear job for the appliance.

A household of two might want space for batch cooking. A household of four might only use the air fryer for a side dish. That is why we do not assign a fixed number of litres to every person. Look at the manufacturer’s food examples, then compare them with your own portions.

Look at the shape of the cooking space

Litres describe volume, but a drawer’s width and depth help you judge what can lie across its base. A deeper basket does not necessarily fit more pieces side by side. Ask for internal basket measurements if the listing gives only the outside dimensions. Check whether quoted space includes a removable plate or rack.

If your usual food needs spreading out, imagine that meal across the drawer base before deciding. You may need to cook in batches. Use the exact model’s instructions for food amounts, layering and shaking; extra height is not permission to fill a basket to the top.

Choose single, split or stacked drawers

One drawer

A sensible shortlist when you mostly cook one dish or a side. A wide single basket may suit a particular tray or larger item better than two narrower ones. Check that item’s dimensions.

Two drawers side by side

Useful when the two parts of dinner need separate settings. The Ninja AF300UK, for example, has two separate drawers and 7.6 litres of capacity in total. The total is not one uninterrupted cooking space. See the manufacturer’s drawer details.

A divider or stacked layout

Some designs split a larger space; others put drawers above each other. Check the configuration you will actually use, how the controls work and the room needed to pull each drawer out. A narrower body can still need considerable depth or height.

Measure the working footprint

Measure your available worktop, then allow for the clearances in the manual. Include the handles, open drawers, power socket position and space above the appliance. A product fitting under a cupboard when switched off does not establish that it can be used safely there.

Think through moving a hot drawer to a suitable surface and serving food without blocking your main preparation area. For storage after each meal, check the machine’s weight and storage dimensions too. A large machine that is awkward to put away may get used less than you expect.

Check the washing-up step

Read how the drawer, plate and any racks must be cleaned. Check whether the actual removable parts fit your sink or dishwasher and which parts the manual allows in a dishwasher. “Dishwasher safe” does not mean every part of the appliance can go in.

Compare the exact bundle, including any racks or probes you need, rather than assuming a photograph shows everything supplied. A cheaper bundle plus missing accessories may cost more overall. Keep delivery and any optional accessories separate when comparing prices.

Make the final size decision

  • Can your usual meal fit in the cooking layout you will use?
  • If you cook two foods, can you use the settings you need?
  • Will you accept occasional batch cooking for larger meals?
  • Have you checked working clearances, open drawers and cleaning?

If two sizes both work, choose the one whose everyday trade-off you prefer: less worktop space, fewer batches, or more flexibility. Do not pay for a bigger litre number without a meal that needs it. For the wider decision, read our air fryer buying guide.
